Ronald Hackney Obituary

Ronald Lee Hackney, age 77, of Rutledge, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, at The Waters of Clinton in Clinton, Tennessee. Born on April 3, 1948, in Pikeville, KY.  Ronald lived a life of distinguished service, unwavering dedication, and profound love for his family and country.

Ronald's remarkable military career began in 1967 when he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his nation with honor and distinction for decades. As a Vietnam Veteran, he exemplified courage and commitment, serving as both a combat engineer and helicopter pilot with thousands of flight hours and an impeccable safety record. His dedication to excellence led him through Officer Candidate School, where he became a field artillery officer, and later to flight school, where he mastered the CH-47 Chinook helicopter. Ronald retired from the Army as a Major, leaving behind a legacy of exemplary service and leadership, including his role as Worshipful Master with the Masonic Lodge in Lawton, Oklahoma.  Following his military retirement, Ronald continued his aviation career for 20 years, flying offshore missions for oil companies, where his expertise and reliability were highly valued.  When he and his beloved wife Bonnie finally retired, they chose to make their home in the beautiful mountains of Tennessee, where Ronald found peace and joy in his later years.

Ronald was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Morristown and an active participant in the Wallen Purkey Sunday School Class, where his faith and fellowship enriched the lives of many. His love for his family was evident in his 55-year marriage to his cherished wife, Bonnie Rife Hackney, and his devotion to his children and extended family. Even his beloved dog, Molly, held a special place in his heart.

Ronald was preceded in death by his parents, Basil and June Ratliff Hackney, and his sisters, Julia "Susie" White and Dorothy Ratliff. He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Bonnie Rife Hackney; his son, Larry Hackney; his daughter, Leisa Hackney; his brother, Don "Verna" Hackney; his brother-in-law, Charlie "Dale" Ratliff; his beloved dog, Molly; and several nieces, nephews, and other family members and friends who will forever cherish his memory.

The family will receive friends on Monday, July 28, 2025, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. in the chapel of Stetzer-Bales Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 7:00 P.M. with Rev. Military graveside services will be held on Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at East Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Knoxville at 10:00 A.M., where Ronald will be laid to rest with the honor befitting his distinguished service to our nation.
