Edwin C. Goan, 74, left this earthly life on November 21, 2020, at his home in Morristown surrounded by his family. A devoted husband and father to his loving wife Nancy for 52 years and to his son Brad, Edwin was the son of Alfred and Anna Ruth Goan. He graduated from Morristown High School in 1964, earned a bachelor’s degree from Milligan College in 1968, and a master’s degree from Union College in 1972. He completed additional graduate coursework at Union College and East Tennessee State University.
An accomplished and innovative educator, Edwin began his teaching career at Hillcrest Elementary School and later became its acting principal. He was the assistant principal at Morristown Junior High School, and in 1975, opened Lincoln Heights Middle School as its first principal, where he served until his retirement in 2002. He also served as principal of Lincoln Heights Learning Center for several years. Always serving his community, following his “retirement,” Edwin spent seventeen years as the public relations director for the United Way of Hamblen County and one year as the assistant principal at Hillcrest Elementary School. He was very involved in his church community, serving as a deacon and elder at both First Christian Church and Community Christian Church. He was also active for many years in Morristown Rotary AM, serving in leadership roles and as president in 2012.
Edwin is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Lynn Bradley, and a twin brother Edward Harold. He is survived by his wife Nancy, his son Brad (Melanie) of Lexington, Kentucky, grandchildren Addison, Eli, and Grayson Goan of Lexington, Kentucky, his sister Phyllis Baird of Morristown, and several nieces and nephews. He will be missed by countless friends, students, professional colleagues, and community members.
Friends may call at their convenience to pay their respects at Stetzer-Bales Funeral Home from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Monday. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the family encourages any callers who wish to pay their respects to follow the appropriate protocols. The family will hold a private graveside service and are planning a celebration of life event in the future.
