Martin Shelling Longmire, age 88, of Whitesburg, passed away Sunday, March 24, 2019 at The Heritage Center after a long illness. He was a member of Living Promise Lutheran Church.
After graduating from Culver Military Academy, he continued his education at the University of Cincinnati where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He subsequently attended MIT where he obtained his PHD in Physics.
He was honorably discharged from the US Air Force in 1965. After a few years of working for NASA he taught at Western Kentucky University until his retirement.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Mack H. and Gladys Stetzer Longmire, Sr.; grandparents, Harry and Allie Stetzer; brother, Mack Harvey Longmire, Jr.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Allen Longmire; stepson, Tony (Teresa) Allen of AL; sisters, Jane (Paul) Cuffee, Rebecca Crowley, both of KY; sister-in-law, Ethel Longmire of Whitesburg; nephews, Mack, Martin and Travis; nieces, Stacy and Lita.
The family will receive friends Thursday, March 28, 2019 in the chapel of Stetzer-Bales Funeral Home from 12:00 – 2:00 P.M. with the funeral service to follow with Rev. Matt Westra officiating. Entombment will follow at Hamblen Memory Gardens.
